Author Interview with RJ Roles

Welcome!

I have a wonderful treat for everyone.

I would like to introduce to you to Author RJ Roles.
He is a newly published independent writer who has the hopes of becoming a great storyteller.
It was a joy being able to chat with him for this interview.
Sit back, relax and enjoy.

Thank You!

Ivy:

Welcome, RJ! How are you doing?

RJ Roles:

I'm doing good, glad to be here, Ivy.

Ivy:

I'm happy to have you here. You're a new author to us so please tell me and the audience alittle bit about yourself.

RJ Roles:

Well, I'm a very new author in general actually. I've just started publishing my writing March of this year.

Ivy:

Congratulations! How long have you been writing overall?

RJ Roles:

Growing up, my buddy and I would always create RPG type adventures for ourselves. Taking bits of pop culture we liked and mashing them all together. While in high school I dabbled with a few stories, but just for fun. It wasn't until 2015 ( I think) that I started to write stuff and think "Why have I not been doing this all along?" In mid to late 2018 I let a few of my friends, who are very accomplished authors in their own right, read some stuff I'd written and they told me I should just release it into the wild.

Ivy:

Sounds like a great start on this writing path you have. It's always a good thing to have a support system from those who are in the same industry.

Please tell us about your first book. What's the title? How did the story develop? And How does it feel to have it published and read by the public?

RJ Roles:

My first book and short novella-length story called Girl's Best Friend. The idea came to me one day while I was sleeping (I work overnights) and I woke suddenly with the idea of a little girl befriending a spider. I let the story marinate a bit in my mind, and started to lay down what the book is now.

On release I was a nervous wreck. When an author releases a book it's like opening your soul for everyone to look in and see what you're made of. Thankfully the readers have seemed to really enjoy Girl's Best Friend, and it makes me happy to have written it.

Ivy:

I look forward to reading it myself.

What genre would you categorize it under?

RJ Roles:

It's firmly in the psychological thriller ballpark with a splash of horror. I never had a certain genre in mind as I was writing it and didn't know myself until it was complete.

Ivy:

As a new author in the Indie publishing industry, what do you hope to accomplish for yourself after taking this first step? How far do you want to go?

RJ Roles:

First and foremost I just want to be a storyteller. Anything after that is just cake. I really just want to tell the best story I can to entertain people.

Ivy:

As a reader, I do enjoy the escape I'm given when I open a book. I believe you will do just what you set your mind too.

Have you taken up writing as a full-time job or is it something you try to get done as often as you can during your day to day life?

RJ Roles:

It's a hobby for me as of right now. I believe for any storyteller, the ideal life is supporting ones self with their writing. Who knows what the future may hold, on that account.

Ivy:

When you aren't writing, what do you do for fun?

RJ Roles:

Reading, of course! But I also enjoy watching movies and documentaries. Video games when I can spare the time. Typical nerd shit I guess, lol.

Ivy:

Lol sounds like a normal guy to me.

Who are your go to author's as a reader?

RJ Roles:

I could be here all night listing some amazing authors, but I'll try to boil it down to a few. Starting out with some bigger names in the industry: Robert McCammon, Brian Keene, Stephen King, JK Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Ray Bradbury. Moving into the indie realm: Justin M. Woodard, Jay Sigler, JZ Foster, Matt Hayward, Patrick Lacey, Chad Lutzke. Just to name a few.

Ivy:

I recognize some of those names, you have a great list there. I'll definitely have to look into reading those indie authors.

In what ways does your family support your writing?

RJ Roles:

They've all been great! From my wife beta reading for me, to other members champing at the bit to get my stuff in their hands. It's part of what makes it all worth it.

Ivy:

That's wonderful to have them all on your side.

So what's next for Author RJ Roles? What are you currently working on?

RJ Roles:

Well, aside from Girl's Best Friend, I have three drabbles in the anthology 100 word horrors book 2. I recently entered and won a throw down competition. (which is where I believe we met?) And like any other writer you could ask, I have about a million works in progress, to which I'm hoping to have at least two more solo releases this year.

Ivy:

Yes, the throw down competition was where we met and I really enjoyed the short stories you'd written. It's groups like that that bring readers and authors together.

RJ Roles:

It's a great community. Speaking of which, I might add that if any of your readers all in the Facebook group Books of Horror, I was a co-founder for that group and has it's own amazing community.

Ivy:

Thank you for letting us all know that. I don't believe I am a member but I would really like to check it out.

If someone came up to you and asked you for some advice about becoming a published author, even though you are new to all of this, what would you tell them?

RJ Roles:

Invest in proper editing, because it's impossible to self-edit. Don't read reviews of your work, but if you must, just know that not everyone likes the same thing. Write what you'd want to read and if you find yourself stuck in a story, just switch tracks for a bit and come back to it, I guarantee it'll help.

Ivy:

That's some really good advice there. I, myself, have to Thank you for it.

RJ Roles:

You're very welcome!

Ivy:

Well RJ, I want to Thank you so much for opening up to me and to all the readers out there in the world. I've learned and I know they've learned about who Author RJ Roles is and what we can expect from him. This definitely isn't the end but just the beginning. As time passes, I look forward having a second interview with you. I also have to Thank you for allowing me to be your first interviewer on your writing journey. I enjoyed myself.

RJ Roles:

Thank you again, Ivy. This was a lot of fun and I'll definitely be down for a round 2 when you come calling.

New Release: JANUARY by Jude Ouvard

Kindle Cover

Title: January, Calendar Men Series
Author: Jude Ouvrard
Editor: Landers Editorial Services
Graphic: The Graphics Shed

LINKS:

Defeated. That’s how Evan Keeler feels. His last tour overseas ended with personal injuries and the loss of his best friend, Fynn Parker. Evan has become broody and gets lost in the darkness of his thoughts more often. Which is no surprise, when he doesn’t see an end to his therapy appointments and can’t seem to get out of his parents’ basement. At her wit’s end, his mother decides it’s enough. Little by little, Mrs. Keeler convinces Evan to try and get better. To get back to living. The catch is, because he’s suffering from memory loss, Evan can’t put all the pieces back together. He doesn’t think his history with Jane was all that perfect so it would help if he could remember where they left things off before this last tour. Although confused by his feelings and reality, Evan does know one thing—he can’t let Jane Parker go.

JANUARY

EXCERPT:

Before leaving my family again, I check on the ankle that gives me so much pain and trouble and it is swollen. I might have pushed it too much today. Joe’s will be the last place I go before dinner. I’ll drive there and sit as soon as I spot Jane.
I take the keys and leave my parents’ home for the third time today. At least Joe’s isn’t far from here.
Getting out of the car when I arrive at the pub, I groan in pain. Right now, I wish I could lay in bed and take a nap. My body and brain need it. Today is turning into a crazy busy day. Not at all what I expected.
I pull open the front door of the pub and I see her. Shit. I didn’t expect that. As Fynn’s twin, even if she is a woman, they look so alike. Their green eyes and smile. Their facial expression is the same, and for one second, it feels like Fynn is here. Jane has me hurting inside right now. It isn’t as if I haven’t seen her before, we hung out many many times, but I don’t recall seeing her since the funeral. My mind and body were in such a mess at the time. Drugged on medication, glued to a wheelchair, I don’t want to remember more of the day I said goodbye to my friend. The doctor didn’t approve, but there was no way I wasn’t going there for my best friend’s funeral. Hell no!
“Hey Keeler, what are you doing here?” With a glass of champagne, she comes to me with a big bright smile.
Why is she so beautiful? Scratch that. Why is she smiling at me like that?
“Your mom said something about Joe. She may not know the code, but I do. Why aren’t you at home with your parents celebrating Christmas?”
Jane frowns at me with attitude. That is a quick change of mood. “Did you come here to have fun or to tell me how bad of a person I am?”
Oh, Jane isn’t happy…
“Listen to yourself, Jane, are you twelve?”
I know she has been drinking and her judgment can be fuzzy, but come on, you don’t leave your family like that when they need you the most.
“Why don’t you go back home, grandpa?” I knew she wouldn’t appreciate my comment, but... “Grandpa, seriously?”
She nods. “That’s what you look like with that cane.”
That feels like a knife stabbing me in the heart.
“Okay, I see how it’s going to be. So, you can stay here, pretending that you’re fine, having the time of your life, and flirting with every single man in the room, but you and I know this is bullshit. You’re here because you don’t know what to do with yourself. You are hurting because this was Fynn’s and your favorite time of year and he’s gone. You’d rather leave your parents alone and be that fake version of yourself.” I look at her from head to toe with anger rising. “You should be ashamed of yourself.”
“Yeah, you should, too, for not bringing Fynn home alive. I’m done with you, asshole.” With tears in her eyes, she turns around and goes back to where she was sitting when I arrived.
My hands are shaking with anger. How can she say something to me like that? Maybe she holds me responsible for his death. I leave the pub not using the cane because there’s nothing I hate more right now. Smashing it against a light pole, it breaks in half.

TEASERS

EXCERPT: Prologue

My thoughts have been occupied with one object for many years now. Nothing can hinder the daydreams, and nothing can stop the nightmares that plague me on a daily basis. It feels as if I'm in the deepest depths of Hell, enduring indescribable agony, but I'll endure whatever Hell brings my way to get what I want - what I need.

It's been over a year I finally found what I was searching for. Over a year since I began watching Charlie Preston. After all this time, I still can't confront her. As if her rejection is an option. Her acceptance of who I am...what I am determines my survival in this world, and what I am isn't easy to digest.

Tonight is like any other night; I crouch in the shadow's which gather around her house, becoming invisible. The only light that threatens to give away my presence comes from the street lights lining the nearby road. I shield myself behind trees and bushes from prying eyes.

It's almost midnight and she sits on her couch, with a bowl of ice cream in her lap as she watches TV. Her dark brown hair is pulled back into a pony tail and her small, curvy body curls up in the corner of the couch. Occasionally her hair flips from side to side as her head jolts at the ridiculous scene playing on the screen. She even waves her spoon in the air yelling obscene words, adding to her dramatics.

Prolonging the inevitable is all I can do to keep her world from crashing down, because once I tell her what she was born for, everything will change. She's meant to live in the vampire world, she's meant to nourish me. Each vampire is given a bloodline to feed from, and the words I keep repeating to myself explain it perfectly. "She's mine," I mutter between tense lips once more.

Author Interview with Sean Kerr by Ivy Valori

Welcome!

I have a wonderful treat for everyone today.
I had the honor of chatting with a multi-genre Author, Mr. Sean Kerr. We talked about his books, his love of writing, his hobbies and more. We also had some great laughs.

Sit back, relax and enjoy this interview.

Thank You!

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR SEAN KERR

Ivy:
My dear Sean, tell me alittle bit about yourself.

Author Sean Kerr:

I"m 49, and live with my husband in Cardiff, Wales. We have been together 30 years. I trained in the fine art and interior design, but my real passions lie with writing and making jewellery. For the last 13 years I have had my own interior design business, but I was taken seriously ill at the beginning of this year, and I lost the business. Now I wok from home, writing and selling hand made cards and jewellery.

Ivy:

I must say that our jewellery is gorgeous. I might have snooped around your pages. Lol

Author Sean Kerr:

I love doing it. It really challenges me and keeps me active.

Ivy:

A beautiful gift you have.

Author Sean Kerr:

My brain is constantly simmering with story lines. I'm a huge film buff, and I love all the old monster movies and sci-fi series. It constantly sets my brain in wondering what I can do with the mythology of various monsters and legends. I have a number of stories on the back burner now, and once Christmas is over I intend to delve into my next saga. And I love to mess around with history.

Ivy:

How many books have you written thus far?

Author Sean Kerr:

I have written 9 books so far and 5 shorts. With everything I write I try to create something different and interesting.

Ivy:

Wow! You're a writing machine.

Author Sean Kerr:

Lol... Not really. Dead Camp was four and a half years of my life. I wrote the first two books before I had a publisher, and that took a couple years but since I was ill, I have written as much as I can to take advantage of being home and I can't sit still for two minutes.  Lol... My brain is constantly thinking for things to write and things to make.

Ivy:

You're in over drive.

Author Sean Kerr:

I have to keep busy. It's just the way I am. Though I like nothing more than to settle down with my husband for an evening and watch  Netflix and films. I always try to keep weekends free so I can indulge in my other hobbies of film and my PS4. Lol

Ivy:

Oh we have a gamer on our hands. Lol

Author Sean Kerr:

I love my PS4. Skyrim. Fallout. Mass Effect. Just some of my favorites. I once lost a month to playing Destiny. Lol

Ivy:

Now do you write for your own pleasure or do you write to satisfy readers?

Author Sean Kerr:

I write for me. I always have. I write the sort of things I like to read. I don't believe in writing to a formula, though that may work for some. I just can't do it. I tried it once and it turned into something much darker because I couldn't help it.

Ivy:

Is there a genre that you haven't tackled yet?

Author Sean Kerr:

I haven't done Sci-fi yet. I have this huge Sci-fi story, I want to develop. It has been rattling around my head for a couple years. I know how the first two books would go, and have an idea for the third. I hope to start that real soon.

Ivy:

Busy busy busy...

Author Sean Kerr:

It will be from a Gay mans perspective, but it won't be hot sex on every page. It's a complex Sci-fi story which I need to develop carefully. I like to build my own mythologies. Dead Camp was my vampire mythology, and The Man Inside Me was my spin on a very old tale.

Ivy:

Have you made any jewellery pieces that compliment some of your stories?

Author Sean Kerr:

My jewellery is totally aside from my books though I like to make some of my pendants after mythological characters and books. The piece I am doing now is made with blue opal and is inspired by Lord Of The Rings.

Ivy:

What are some of challenges, if any, that you face as a writer?

Author Sean Kerr:

Keeping going. With so many established and stunning authors out there, it is very difficult to get noticed and not be swallowed up by the hundreds of books circulating. At the moment I have hit a brick wall. I have started two manuscripts and I have abandoned both of them.

I need to find my way into a book. I need to find a voice for it in order for it to fly, and right now, I'm having difficulty with that. I have put out quite a bit this year, and perhaps I just need to step away for a bit and recharge but there are these stories in my mind that I really want to tell. Dark, scary, sexy stories that need to find voices.

Ivy:

Sometimes recharging of ones mind is needed.

Author Sean Kerr:

Yes. It's been a strange year. I lost a great deal, including a lot of myself. I have yet to get that back. But I'm working hard to try and remedy that.

Ivy:

Good for you. I'm happy to hear that.

You're both a published and indie author, correct?

Author Sean Kerr:

I am indeed yes! I am proud to be both. For the near future at least, I will stay indie. It is a dream to be picked up by one of the big publishing houses, but I doubt that will happen because of the sort of things I write. Though you never know, my Horror books may get noticed.

Ivy:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of being both published and indie?

Author Sean Kerr:

With a publisher, you lose a fair amount of control. With my Dead Camp series, I had to lose some things due to company rules regarding what is and is not allowed. Also, I have no control over how the book is published, or indeed the money I get from them.

Being Indie, I can write and stay true to my idea without compromising content. There is a scene towards the end of The Man Inside Me which would not be allowed at my publishers. In my world, I was able to do it. I can also control the prices, the marketing, everything about the books.

I find that I love having that level of control. It is a VERY steep learning curve and I have made some huge mistakes, but I am proud of what I have achieved so far, and I am really looking forward to seeing where it will take me next. But to belong to a big publishing house has other more important advantages. Like having a huge ready made audience.

That is something I am craving for, and it may see me hunting for a larger publisher. I would also like to get an agent, but that is almost impossible to achieve.

Ivy:

Well, I have a feeling 2019 will be your year to get that agent and a publishing house deal.

Author Sean Kerr:

I would love that!!!

Ivy:

Is there any subject that you wouldn't write about?

Author Sean Kerr:

My lovely mum asked why I don't have a go at writing crime/thriller. But that is just not me. I love my Paranormal, horror and sci-fi. The worlds are your own and you are not bound by human laws, so I find that far more exciting. Having said that, a crime thriller with a supernatural twist? Maybe lol

Ivy:

See now there you go, the beginning of a story. Lol... It all starts with a question.

Author Sean Kerr:

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!! You are absolutely right there!!!

Ivy:

Look out everyone, you saw it here first. The start of a new crime thriller by Author Sean Kerr. Hahaha!

Author Sean Kerr:

HAHAHA!! Yeah, never ask an author a question! Especially one who loves conspiracy theories!

Ivy:

*laughs

Tell us 3 fun facts about yourself

Author Sean Kerr:

First, I once attended an author signing event. ShiMMer in a giant inflatable Cock outfit. Second, sometimes I pretend I'm Norma Desmond and sing the entire soundtrack to Sunset Boulevard. Third, I once dreamt that David Tennant bent me over the Tardis console and did very rude things to me. I have never recovered.

Ivy:

*hilariously laughing* I'm dying here...

Author Sean Kerr:

Lmfao... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! It's all true. Oh, and as an added bonus. my short story, The One Ring is a true story.

Ivy:

I truly believe they are. I can imagine you doing all of that. For those who aren't familiar with that story, can you give us a brief description of it?

Author Sean Kerr:

Let's just say it involves some Sunday morning frolics and a diamond ring that suddenly goes missing and the pain of having to ....find it again.

Ivy:

Oh I must read this now. Lol

Author Sean Kerr:

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! You will need a tissue to mop up your tears of laughter. That short story has become...infamous.

Ivy:

The link will be provided so that readers can start the fun reading adventure.

Author Sean Kerr:

OMG!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! I hope they know what they are in for lol.

Ivy:

Thank you the laughter.

Are you a music listening as you write kind of author?

Author Sean Kerr:

No. Or I start singing along and get no where. I love to put old monster movies on in the background, or episodes of Doctor Who. They just get me in the mood.

Ivy:

That's different.

Do you have any weird or fun writing habits?

Author Sean Kerr:

Nothing weird I'm afraid. But I do have to make sure that all the housework is done first or I can't settle. And I have to have and endless supply of coffee and my e-cig always at hand.

Ivy:

One last question for you...

Having been in this writing career for quite some time, What advice, if any, would you give new aspiring writers?

Author Sean Kerr:

Always ask for help, and never let anyone tell you that you can't do it. The best thing I ever did was make wonderful friends in the community. I also made the best friend out of my Maggie Lane who is my PA, and I made a best friend of my gorgeous editor, Laura McNellis, who edits all my books. A book isn't something you just write and publish. You have to have amazing covers, and the editing is so absolutely vital. Find an editor you trust, and listen to them. They just want your book to be the best it can be, and sometimes an author can be too close to their work to see it's flaws. So listen. And keep listening. \Keep learning. And keep pushing the boundaries for the genres you write. My books are very different to anything else out there, because that is what I love to do. I like to push boundaries and I try very hard to make every book new and vibrant. Make friend. Be a part of this amazing community, because without it, they are just words on paper.

Ivy:

Wow! What amazing advice. Thank you so much for that. I'm sure it will be very helpful to many. I want to Thank you for joining me today, Sean. It's been such a great pleasure getting to know alittle more about you. You're a gentleman and very funny too. I love it! I look forward to reading more of your work as you delight us all with your books in 2019.

Author Sean Kerr:

Thank you so very much for having me. And I want to say Thank you for everything you do. As an author, it is vital to reach people, and you help us to do that. You are as important to this industry as our editors are to us. So thank you with all my heart for your kindness and your support.

Ivy:

Thank you for your kind words. It brings great joy to my heart to give to you and other authors my unconditional support. I love reading and helping others. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your husband. We shall definitely do this again.

Author Sean Kerr:

My love to you my friend. I hope that you have a wonderful xmas, and that the new year brings you much love and happiness. xxxxx

Ivy:

Thank you, Sean.

Author Sean Kerr:

Take Care Ivy.

POISON IVY'S REVIEW

I was very excited to get my hands on Korean Road by Brian Scutt because I've heard so many outstanding things about this story. I also have the privilege of being friends with the Brian and he's a great person. When I received my paperback copy in the mail, I wasted no time in opening the envelope and diving into it.

Let me just say that this story is PHENOMENAL. Wow! The instant hold this story has on the reader is like no other. You really don't want to put it down. The introduction of Dick, the main character, was not so gentle but than again it was.

The story takes you into the horrific journey of a Koren war marine veteran, who has a difficult time leaving the past behind. It's filled with his emotional past, haunting ghosts, the mental and physical torture of that past but it's brought into his present life.

The outstanding narration between the past and present was just flawless. You never got lost from one transition into the next. It all made sense as you read along. The pain of a broken family, the agony and burdens upon one man and his loved ones, was heartwrenching.

Brian's storytelling is so natural and flows easily on the pages of the book. He helped you understand through a flashback why the present was the way it was. It was an emotional rollercoaster that you don't want to get off of until the end. You couldn't predict what was coming next but when it came around, boy did it pack a punch.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this novella.

I, Poison Ivy, give this book 5 stars with a high recommendation.

If you're looking for something new to read, this is the book for you.
